WHY I RUN
👋🏼 Hi, I’m Sarah. For as long as I can remember, running has been something I turn to when I need a clear head and an endorphin fix. I ran my first race in 2nd grade, cross country, track, my first half marathon in 2010, and on and on and on.
On December 11, 2021, at 8:43 am, my mother woke me with the words “I have breast cancer.” Cue my whole world imploding. “How can I help? What can I do? Is this real life? How do I stop this? What the in the actual hell is happening?” An overwhelming feeling of helplessness came over me.
After receiving the news, I chose to move back to the east coast for the duration of my Mom’s treatment. I needed to keep myself healthy, so decided to train for the OC Half Marathon while I was living in Pennsylvania. Finally, I wanted to make my runs more purposeful, so I set up a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Inspired by Mom’s tenacity and passion for life, I completed my second half marathon on May 1, 2022 and raised money for BCRF. Since then, I was approached with an amazing opportunity to get more involved with the OC Marathon and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation as the team captain and charity lead for the 2023 race(s).
My runs feel different these days. There’s a drive to do more and be better. Giving up isn’t a choice. So, this year, I will run 26.2 for my mom, the most bad ass Baba there ever was. Scream it from the rooftops, Mom, aka “Baba” has been cancer free since July 2022.
You hear people say, “Cancer is life changing.” You don’t realize how true that is until you’re in the thick of it. You have no choice but to walk (or run) through the nightmare. This is for the fighters, the survivors, and our guardian angels.
